Community Based Exercises: The idea

The aim of the community-based exercises was to increase community resilience by improving the disaster preparedness of citizens and all key stakeholders within the community. Specific aims were to:

  • Provide information on an effective response in the case of emergency and disaster
  • Strengthen the coping mechanisms of community members
  • Provide an opportunity to transfer theoretical knowledge into practice within communities
  • Create links between different stakeholders such as: volunteers, authorities, media and response organisations

A community-based exercise was carried out in one community in each participating country. These exercises were one-day interactive events involving 150 to 500 participants including citizens and all key stakeholders. A guide for other communities interested in running exercises is available in Bulgarian, English, French, German, Latvian and Romanian.
